2022/2023 Freshmen trained on the use of the Virtual Classroom
On the 18th of January 2022, the KNUST E-Learning Centre (KEC) organised an online training session for the University’s freshmen to introduce them to the University's online learning management system, the KNUST Virtual Classroom (VClass). In educational technology, virtual learning is a web-based platform for the digital components to study programs, typically within educational institutions. They were exposed to the many stages of evaluation and taken through the present resources, activities, and interactions within a course structure.
The Virtual Classroom serves as a communication channel where all students need to log on to a laptop or a mobile phone with internet connectivity. Passwords and username are key to access the virtual class and they were provided to the freshmen by the University Information Technology Services.
The session began with a brief introduction by the instructors, who explained the importance of the online learning management system in the students' academic journey. They highlighted the various features of the system, such as submitting assignments, accessing course materials, and communicating with professors.
The students were then taken through a step-by-step demonstration of how to navigate the system, from logging in to accessing their course schedules. The instructor emphasised the importance of keeping their login information secure and explained the various security features in place to protect their personal information.
Next, the students were shown how to access and download course materials, including syllabi, readings, and videos. They were also introduced to the system's assignment submission feature and were given a demonstration of how to submit their work and check their grades.
The students were also introduced to the system's communication features, such as the messaging system and discussion boards. The instructor explained how they can use these features to communicate with their professors and classmates, and how to access office hours and other support services.
Overall, the training was well-received by the students. They appreciated the hands-on approach and the detailed information provided. They felt confident in their ability to navigate the virtual classroom and were excited to begin their academic journey at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
