Bindura University Vice-Chancellor explores E-Learning partnerships at KNUST
The Vice-Chancellor of Bindura University of Science Education, Professor Eddie Mwenje, has visited the KNUST E-Learning Centre to learn about its digital education strategies and explore potential collaboration between the two institutions.
During the visit, Professor Mwenje emphasized the importance of digital learning in higher education and expressed interest in strengthening partnerships.
“Our mission was to visit two universities—University of Cape Coast and KNUST. We are an educational institution with six faculties, including engineering, science, commerce, social sciences, humanities, and agriculture. We have been working to expand our academic programs, including a new Optometry degree in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast,” he said.
Professor Mwenje noted that Bindura University, with a student population of 7,000, is marking its 25th anniversary this year. He highlighted the significance of integrating digital learning into the institution’s academic framework.
Professor Eric Appau Asante, Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre, explained KNUST’s approach to blended learning.
“We run a lot of programs in a blended mode, with both online and in-person components, following Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) guidelines. For traditional programs, 30 percent is online and 70 percent is in person. For distance learning, we apply a 50-50 model,” he said.
He explained that the E-Learning Centre plays a role in ensuring that lecturers and students have the necessary infrastructure for online teaching and assessment.
“Our e-learning operations are running well with top management support. We have structured our operations to provide instructional design, system support, and quality assurance to ensure smooth online teaching and learning,” Professor Asante added.
The delegation included Daniel Chihombori, Deputy to the Vice-Chancellor at the University of Zimbabwe; Senior Assistant Registrar at KNUST E-Learning Centre, Abigail Dzama Anderson; and Senior Administrative Assistant at the International Programmes Office, KNUST, Ernestine Oheneba Danso.
Professor Mwenje expressed appreciation for the visit and the insights gained from KNUST’s e-learning model. “We are a small university, but we want to learn and collaborate. We have received a warm welcome, and we look forward to future partnerships,” he said.
The visit is expected to open discussions on possible collaborations between Bindura University and KNUST in e-learning, digital education strategies, and faculty training.
