Commonwealth Day celebrations highlight AI’s role in youth empowerment
The Commonwealth community marked Commonwealth Day on March 10 with global celebrations, including a service at Westminster Abbey and various cultural and civic events. This year’s theme, "Together We Thrive," emphasized unity, peace, and progress among the 56 member countries.
As part of the celebrations, an online discussion was held on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in youth empowerment. Professor Eric Appau Asante, Director of the E-Learning Centre at KNUST, was the guest speaker. He highlighted how AI is transforming industries and everyday life, stating that the real question is not if AI will change the world but who will lead that change.
“Young people must move beyond being passive users of AI to becoming active participants. Eplore AI’s potential in education, climate change solutions, and healthcare improvements,” Professor Asante, a recognized figure in e-learning, encouraged ethical AI use, ensuring fairness and inclusivity.
He called on the youth to be responsible innovators, creating solutions that serve everyone, not just a select few. The discussion ended with a call to action for young people in the Commonwealth to embrace AI as a tool for development and to lead transformative change in their communities.
