Day 1 of KNUST E-Learning Week: Embracing Excellence in Digital Education
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has proven its commitment to advancing education through technology with the commencement of its E-Learning Awareness Week and the second E-Learning International Conference. Under the theme “Fostering Excellence In E-Learning Across Diverse Disciplines: Progress, Challenges, and Prospects,” this year’s event promises a rich exploration of the future of e-learning.
Vice-Chancellor's Opening Address
The event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, faculty, students, and international dignitaries. In her keynote address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson highlighted the university’s strides towards becoming a Centre of Excellence for E-Learning in Africa and beyond. “Our journey towards the centre of excellence in E-Learning is still a work in progress,” she stated.
“It requires us to continuously adapt, innovate, and embrace new technologies and pedagogies.” Professor Dickson expressed her enthusiasm for the progress made, including the recent inauguration of KNUST’s first-ever virtual reality studios, which are set to enhance the educational experience through immersive learning.
Technological Advancements and Inclusivity
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the transformative role of technology in education, noting that it breaks down geographical barriers and makes learning more accessible and inclusive. She highlighted the integration of Artificial Intelligence at KNUST, which personalizes the educational experience to meet the unique needs of each student.
However, she acknowledged the challenges that remain, particularly in ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all students. Initiatives like the KNUST SONSOL Project, which has provided laptops to over 793 needy students, are crucial in creating an equitable digital learning environment.
Day One Highlights The first day of the weeklong event was packed with engaging activities: Director of the E-Learning Centre, Professor Eric Appau Asante, delivered an insightful address. He reflected on the evolution of the E-Learning Awareness Week, from its inception in 2022 themed “KNUST E-Learning: A New Age for Digital Transformation” to last year’s “Education Without Borders.” This year’s focus, he noted, is on fostering excellence in e-learning across diverse disciplines, exploring progress, challenges, and future prospects.
International Perspectives
The event also featured perspectives from the diplomatic community on the interdisciplinary practices and socio-economic impact of e-learning: Her Excellency Shlomit Sufa, Ambassador of Israel to Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, emphasized the role of Israeli tech companies in addressing e-learning challenges in Ghana. She highlighted the importance of equipping the next generation with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Dianne Brimey, Scientific Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy, discussed the need for capacity building for teachers. She shared insights from France, where continuing education programs help teachers integrate digital technologies into their methods, promoting equitable access to education and fostering innovation.
Looking Ahead
The week will continue with college-level interactions, practical sessions on online branding, and discussions on maximizing opportunities within the global academic community. The climax of the week will be the 2024 E-Learning International Conference, featuring a keynote address from Professor Colin Riordan, Secretary-General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and a speech by Ghana’s Minister of Education.
KNUST’s E-Learning Awareness Week is not just a series of events but a celebration of the university’s dedication to educational excellence. It is a platform to inspire, innovate, and imagine the limitless possibilities of e-learning, setting a benchmark for educational institutions across the globe.
