Day 3 of faculty training for affiliate institutions focuses on online student success
The third day of the Faculty Training for Affiliate Institutions, organized by the KNUST E-Learning Centre, was on strategies to improve online student success. The session explored challenges in online learning and ways to enhance engagement and retention.
Facilitators Dr. Eliel Keelson, Dr. Samuel Antwi, Dr. Obed Broohm, Dr. Kwadwo Boakye Boadu, and Mr. Abeaku Badu Arthur led discussions on the need for discipline, motivation, and structured teaching approaches in online education. Participants shared challenges encountered in online learning, particularly the decline in student engagement and attendance.
Some lecturers noted that after an initial high turnout, numbers often drop significantly. "Keeping students engaged is a challenge. Many start excited but struggle to stay motivated," one participant observed.
Facilitators introduced various strategies, including Active Learning, Flipped Classroom, and Peer Learning. They emphasized the importance of making lessons interactive and incorporating elements like Gamification and Project-Based Learning.
"Peer learning is one of the best ways to support students who are struggling.
It encourages collaboration and makes learning more engaging," a participant shared. A video presentation on teaching methodologies explained how different approaches can help sustain student interest.
The session also covered the role of behaviourism in online teaching and how understanding student learning patterns can improve outcomes.
Concerns about high dropout rates were also addressed.
Participants discussed how some students lose motivation due to a lack of interaction, difficulties with time management, or a misconception that online learning requires less effort.
The facilitators highlighted solutions such as using regular assessments, building online learning communities, and offering structured guidance to students.
The session ended with a self-assessment exercise, allowing participants to reflect on their teaching methods and identify areas for improvement. The three-day training provided faculty members with essential skills to enhance online education in their institutions.
