First-Year Students Trained On Digital Literacy

The KNUST E-Learning Centre has trained all first-year students in digital literacy on the university’s main campus. The training helped students to navigate the updated KNUST LMS interface, taking online exams and video conferencing tools for teaching and learning.

Professor Eric Appau Asante, Director of the E-Learning Centre, explained the reason for the training.

“Many first-year students are new to online learning. This training helps them use the Learning Management System (LMS) and other digital tools for their studies.”

Nana Adwoa Kwabea Baidu, Head of the Training and Research Unit, shared the process of organizing the training. “We had to plan for a large number of students. The student population is over 19,000. We used all the computer laboratories,”

The training was hands-on. Students practiced how to use the LMS to access lecture materials, submit assignments, and take online quizzes. They also learned to use video conferencing tools for online classes and digital skills for research and communication. As part of the training, students completed a self-paced course that contained tutorials on online learning.

After finishing the course, they generated their own certificates. A student who took part in the training shared their experience.

“This training has helped me understand how to use the LMS. Before this, I was not sure how I was going to find my course materials or submit assignments online.” The training team, made up of some facilitators, focused on the psychology of online learning, while others taught virtual classroom engagement and online exams.
