KNUST E-Learning Centre trains CANR lecturers on online teaching and assessment
Selected lecturers from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), have benefitted from a three-day refresher training bythe KNUST E-Learning Centre to strengthen their skills in online teaching and assessments.
The training follows a request from the CANR College Board for a "trainer-of-trainers" workshop after an earlier university-wide faculty training conducted by the E-Learning Centre.
The Board noted that the previous training had time constraints, making it necessary to organize another session to provide a deeper understanding of online teaching.
The refresher training is designed to help participants improve their teaching strategies and their ability to conduct online assessments. The focus is on the new KNUST Learning Management System (LMS), Virtual Classroom, and item writing for online exams. An aspect of the training is the item writing session, taught participants how to develop effective exam questions for online Computer-Based Examinations.
This will ensure that assessments are clear, fair, and aligned with learning objectives. Dr. Edem Guston Awashie, a facilitator at the training stated that online teaching is an important part of education at KNUST.
“Online learning is here to stay, and lecturers need to be well-equipped to guide students through it. This training will help lecturers create a more interactive and structured learning experience for students,” he said.
The workshop also highlights how to manage student participation in the Virtual Classroom, monitor attendance, and provide timely feedback. Participants will also learn how to use the system’s tools to track student progress.
At the end of the training, participants will receive a Certified Trainer’s Certificate, which recognizes their competence in online teaching and assessments. They will also serve as E-Learning Ambassadors within their departments, responsible for sharing their knowledge and supporting their colleagues.
The training forms part of the KNUST E-Learning Centre’s commitment to equipping faculty members with the necessary skills to integrate technology into teaching. The Centre continues to organize workshops and support lecturers in adapting to digital education.
The three-day training covered different aspects of online teaching, including multimedia tools for content delivery and strategies for maintaining student engagement in virtual classrooms. The session also addressed common challenges lecturers face in online teaching and provide practical solutions.
