KNUST E-Learning Centre Commences Online Short Course on Leadership Development and Coaching

As part of efforts to advance the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of promoting good leadership through the digitization agenda, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) E-Learning Centre has commenced a 3-week online short course on Leadership Development and Coaching for Student’s Leaders on Friday, 2nd December 2022. According to the Director of the Centre, Professor Eric Appau Asante, the initiative, dubbed ‘Learn to Lead’ is in collaboration with the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Centre for Capacity Building and Innovation (CCBI) to improve and shape students’ leadership skills.

Professor Asante indicated that about Three Hundred (300) applicants, some of whom are not KNUST students have registered for the course. He assured to make available all E-Learning equipment, staff and resources to support the program, its participants and facilitators. ‘We are highly indebted to management for giving us the mandate to run these online certificate awarding short courses with support from CCBI and the various colleges and faculties’, he said. He added that the participants would be exposed to interactive courses made up of models such as ‘Leadership Communication, Ethics in Leadership and the Core Skills of a Great Team Leader’, facilitated by resource persons with practical knowledge in these fields. He further pledged his outfit’s commitment to fulfilling their mandate.

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson emphasised that, ‘Leadership is developed not discovered as our daily activities demand that we make decisions and find solutions to problems’. She stressed that Leaders are not born, rather, they improve and work on their skills. She, therefore, charged participants to take advantage of every opportunity and hold in high esteem the courses to be taught in order to add value and prepare them for the future. Professor Dickson encouraged the participants to be self-disciplined as leadership is about taking responsibility not giving excuses. ‘Take mentorship seriously, read about other leaders to broaden your horizon, build on your teamwork’.

Introducing the course to the participants, Mr Maximus Adu-Safo, an alumnus and past SRC President of KNUST gave an overview of the ‘Concept of Leadership’. He presented on the various types of leaders and their characteristics.

Other resource persons expected to facilitate the course in subsequent sessions include; Ms Ruth Brown; Mr Enoch Ofosu, Mr Paul Kofi Mantey and Dr Mary Ashun.
