KNUST E-Learning Centre marks 2025 UNESCO International Day of Digital Learning
The KNUST E-Learning Centre has celebrated the 2025 UNESCO International Day of Digital Learning with a virtual event. The event is on how digital learning can support students in areas where resources are limited. This year’s theme, “Digital Learning in Low-Resource Contexts” guided the discussions.
Speakers explored how digital tools can make education more accessible for students who face financial, technological, or geographical challenges. Professor Eric Appau Asante, Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre, spoke about the need to use technology to improve education. “UNESCO has set this day to recognize the role of digital learning in shaping education.
As a university, we must continue to support students with the right digital tools,” he said. Professor Isaac Kwame Dontwi, Chair of the KNUST E-Learning Board, added that digital learning is key to improving education in Ghana and beyond. “We need to invest in digital learning to ensure that no student is left behind,” he stated.
A part of the celebration was the Digital Storytelling Challenge. Students were asked to share their learning experiences in low-resource environments. The challenge gave them the chance to highlight the difficulties they face and how they use digital tools to overcome them. The best stories were compiled into a documentary titled “Voices of Digital Learning.”
The film premiered during the event, showing real stories of students who have found ways to keep learning despite challenges. Mr. Abdul Hamid Yakub, Head of Communication and Information at UNESCO Accra Office, spoke about the realities of digital learning.
“Many students struggle with access to the internet and devices. We must work together to ensure that education is not limited by location or income,” he said. Speakers at the event called for more investment in digital education.
They emphasized the need for affordable internet, access to digital devices, and training for students and teachers. Abigail Dzama Anderson, Senior Assistant Registrar at the KNUST E-Learning Centre, closed the event with a message.
“Digital learning is not just about technology. It is about making sure all students, no matter where they are, can learn. We must continue to support this goal,” she said.
