KNUST Hosts and Wins the 2023 National Junior Science and Maths Quiz

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in collaboration with the KNUST E-learning Centre (KEC), KNUST Institute of Distance Learning (IDL), Dext Technologies in partnership with EriDec Ghana, KNUST College of Science and the Ghana Education Service (GES) organized the 2023 National Junior Science and Maths Quiz. The competition took place from Wednesday, November 29th to Monday, December 4th 2023 featuring twenty-seven junior high schools from the Ashanti, Greater Accra, Western, and Northern regions.

Before the national championship, the regional preliminaries and qualifiers unfolded. The Ashanti Regional preliminaries and qualifiers occurred at the KNUST Allotey Auditorium, while the preliminaries and qualifiers for the other regions took place at the KNUST Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) centres across the respective regions. The JSMQ was established by organizers to promote the advancement of Science and Mathematics education in junior high schools nationwide. The Service Support team from the KNUST E-Learning Center was instrumental in the live streaming of the competition from start to finish.

JSMQ ORGANISERS

The National championship kicked off with quarterfinals featuring nine contests, three contests per day, held at the Evans Anfom Auditorium (KNUST). Each contest consisted of three schools and after five rounds, the top school from each contest advanced to the semi-finals. The semi-finals mirrored the same format and was held at the Great Hall-KNUST, with Barbara Internal School (W/R), KNUST Basic JHS (A/R), and Manna International School (A/R) qualifying for the Grand Finale.

The Grand Finale was held at the Great Hall on December 4, 2023, at 11 am. Despite a challenging start, KNUST Basic JHS secured a commanding lead with 35 points, maintaining it throughout to finish with 45 points. Manna Int’l School followed with 38 points, and Barbara Int’l School with 15 points.

After the final round, contestants received certificates, laptops, book purchase coupons, and cash prizes. KNUST Basic JHS was presented with a cheque of Five-thousand Ghana cedis, while the second and first runner-up schools received cheques of three thousand Ghana cedis and Two-thousand Ghana Cedis respectively. Trainers of the winning school were also honored with laptops.

Dr. Sylverken Augustina Angelina, the quiz mistress in her final words expressed hope that the Junior Science and Maths Quiz would usher in a new era of science and math engagement among junior high school students in Ghana.
