KNUST officials address admissions challenges and clarify requirements in podcast at the KNUST E-Learning Centre

Understanding the admissions process at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, involves more than meeting academic qualifications. In a recent moderated by Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe of the University Relations Office, alongside Mr. Charles Asamoah-Boateng, Deputy Registrar of the Admissions Office, and Mr. Christopher Addo, Senior Assistant Registrar at the E-Learning Centre, they clarified the requirements and addressed common challenges faced by applicants.

Dr. Bekoe mentioned the importance of accuracy in submitting applications, particularly regarding details like index numbers and examination years. "Any mistake in these areas will affect the system’s ability to retrieve the correct information," He also addressed the role of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in verifying results.

"We have an automated system linked to WAEC that picks and verifies results, reducing the risk of fraud." Admission requirements Mr. Asamoah-Boateng highlighted the mandatory documents required for the application process. "Applicants must attach their academic certificates, a Ghana Card, passport, or birth certificate.

These are necessary for verifying nationality and identity," When asked about alternatives for applicants lacking these documents, he said, "At least one of these documents must be submitted.

It is a mandatory requirement for processing applications." Mr. Addo, speaking from the perspective of the E-Learning Centre, shed light on admissions for distance learning programs. He outlined the categories of programs available, including diploma, top-up, and postgraduate options.

"For diploma programs, applicants need passes in three core subjects—English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies—along with at least two elective subjects," he explained. Distance learning and program details The distance learning mode provides flexibility, allowing students to work while pursuing their studies. "Classes are held on weekends, making it accessible for working professionals," Mr. Addo said. He added that the diploma programs cater to various fields, including health, business, and technology.

"For health-related diploma programs, applicants must have a strong background in the sciences." He also clarified the requirements for top-up programs, stating, "Applicants with a diploma from accredited institutions can apply to upgrade their qualifications through our top-up programs." Deadlines and application challenges Mr. Asamoah-Boateng announced that the deadline for undergraduate applications is November 30, 2024, while postgraduate applications will close on December 15, 2024.

He encouraged applicants to ensure their applications are error-free. "Common issues include incorrect index numbers, examination years, and names.

These errors delay processing," he said. Addressing frequently asked questions, Mr. Asamoah-Boateng advised prospective students to carefully follow the application guidelines. "For those who wish to purchase application forms, you can do so via mobile platforms or from designated banks," he explained. Physician assistantship program The podcast also touched on the discontinuation of the Physician Assistantship program at KNUST, effective from the 2024/2025 academic year.

"This decision was made following directives from our regulators," Mr Asamoah Boateng revealed. He advised interested students to explore other institutions offering the program.

Final advice Mr. Asamoah-Boateng concluded by emphasising the importance of double-checking applications before submission. "Ensure your index number, examination year, and other details are accurate to avoid complications. Our systems are designed to verify all information, but the onus is on the applicant to provide the right details.

" Prospective students are encouraged to visit the university’s admissions portal or contact the relevant offices for further clarification.
