Learning to Relate: KNUST E-Learning Centre Hosts Talk on Trust and Respect

The KNUST E-Learning Centre has hosted a podcast conversation on the topic: “Respect and Trust: The Keys to a Healthy Relationship.”

The session was held in the Centre’s media studios in collaboration with the KNUST Counselling Centre.

Mr. Rabbi Darko, Assistant Counsellor at the KNUST Counselling Centre, and Reverend Reginald Adanuvor from the Relationship Clinic, joined the conversation as guests.

Together, they discussed how trust and respect shape meaningful relationships and what causes breakdowns in many of them.

“People carry their past into new relationships. They go through pain, and instead of healing, they let their new partner pay for what the previous one did. That is not fair.” Mr. Darko said

He explained that some people struggle to open up because of childhood trauma or past betrayal. “If someone has not healed, it becomes hard to be honest or respectful. You may end up punishing the wrong person.”

Mr. Darko advised that people seek help from professionals or experienced people with insight.

“Don’t talk to just anybody. Some people will make it worse. Look for a trained counsellor or someone who has gone through the journey.”

Reverend Adanuvor focused on the foundation of trust and respect in romantic and family relationships.

“You cannot build a strong home without trust and respect. If there is no honesty, openness, and clear communication, the house will fall,” he said.

He added that respect is not something demanded, but earned.

“Respect is not built with words. It is built through the way you treat people, how you talk to them, and how you care for their feelings.”

The Reverend also addressed the effects of culture and upbringing. He shared a story of a young couple whose differences in background nearly ended their relationship.

“The wife ate the meat first during a meal. The husband thought it meant she could not be trusted. But that was only a belief from his culture,” he said. “Without proper understanding, small things like this can cause damage.”

Both guests urged young people to seek counseling even before marriage.

“You don’t wait for the house to fall before asking for help,” Mr. Darko said. “Even people in healthy relationships should talk to someone.”
