On Thursday, July 27, 2023, a significant milestone was achieved as the Obuasi Campus of KNUST hosted its first E-Learning Day, becoming a prominent feature event for the KNUST E-Learning Week Celebration 2023. Prof. Richard Boamah, the Coordinating Dean of the Campus, welcomed everyone with enthusiasm, praising the KNUST E-Learning Centre for this initiative and expressing gratitude for including the Obuasi Campus in the E-Learning Week celebrations.
Prof. Eric Appau Asante, the Director of the E-Learning Centre, followed with introductory remarks, highlighting the significance of the event and the campus' inclusion in this year's E-Learning Week. He provided an insightful overview of the E-Learning Centre's activities and outlined the planned activities for the day.
In line with the week's theme, "Education Without Borders", the E-Learning Day commenced with a blended-style presentation. Dr. Linda Amoako Banning delivered her presentation on “Collaborative Tools” virtually to an engaged in-person audience of students from the Obuasi Campus. Dr. Banning emphasized the importance of collaborative learning, flexibility, increased accessibility, and active peer learning. Throughout her presentation, she highlighted the promising prospects of technology for breaking down physical barriers and facilitating virtual collaborations. The session included an interactive hands-on segment where students actively participated in exploring some of the collaborative tools discussed.
Adding an element of fun and competition to the event, Mr. Edwin Edem Adedze, an E-Learning staff member, facilitated an interactive live quiz using Mentimeter. Participants were presented with questions related to e-learning and collaborative tools, and winners were rewarded with exciting prizes, creating a sense of enthusiasm and engagement among the attendees.
The Online Learning Festival provided students with the opportunity to explore various exhibition stands and gaming booths, further immersing themselves in the world of digital education. The festival showcased diverse educational technologies and resources, inspiring students to embrace technology in their academic pursuits.
As the day drew to a close, a live podcast featuring three students and esteemed faculty member Dr. Akyana Britwum was broadcasted online. The podcast focused on "Leveraging New Media for E-Learning: Prospects and Challenges". The discussion delved into the role of new media in enhancing the e-learning experience and the potential hurdles that come with its implementation.
The Obuasi Campus's first E-Learning Day was a resounding success, marking a milestone in KNUST’s journey to an education without borders. The event exemplified the University’s commitment to empowering students and faculty with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age.
