Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Akowuah Appointed Acting Director of KNUST E-Learning Centre


The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has appointed Ing. Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Akowuah as the Acting Director of the E-Learning Centre.

His appointment, which takes effect from 1st November 2025, was made on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and is subject to ratification by the University Council.

The appointment will last for two academic years in the first instance, after which he may be considered for reappointment for another two years.

Prof. Akowuah takes over from Prof. Eric Appau Asante, who has been directed to hand over to him. Ing. Prof. Akowuah is an Electrical and Electronic Engineer and a registered member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE).

He is also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organization.

He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at KNUST and a fellow of The Brew-Hammond Energy Center (TBHEC), a multidisciplinary research centre at the College of Engineering.

Prof. Akowuah holds a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent, England, where he developed surface plasmon resonance sensor designs for multiple applications.

He also holds an MSc in Broadband and Mobile Communication Networks from the same university and a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from KNUST.

He has more than a decade of engineering practice experience covering wireless and optical communication systems, software solutions, network and distributed systems, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy systems.

His research interests include photonic devices, optical fibres, plasmon polaritons, and intelligent energy management systems. He has several publications in recognised international journals in these areas.

In 2009, he received the IEEE UK/RI Communication Chapter MSc Prize for his work on a novel optical fibre design for high-speed communication systems.

Beyond teaching and research, Prof. Akowuah has also worked as a consultant for engineering firms and has led several projects in areas such as payment systems, enterprise resource planning, wide area networks, and grid-connected photovoltaic systems.

He has experience working with multidisciplinary teams on projects funded by both local and international donors.

His appointment marks a new phase for the KNUST E-Learning Centre as the university continues to expand its digital learning infrastructure and academic technology initiatives.

Akowuah's combination of academic experience, engineering practice, and leadership in technology-driven initiatives positions him to guide the E-Learning Centre in advancing technology-enabled education at KNUST.
