Students from the South Dakota State University visit KNUST E-Learning Centre to explore digital learning
A group of students from South Dakota State University have visited the E-Learning Centre of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, as part of a health and cultural exchange programme.
The visit was part of their tour of KNUST facilities and aimed at learning about how online and blended learning is delivered in Ghana.
The Director of the E-Learning Centre, Professor Eric Appau Asante, took the group through the Centre’s role in supporting teaching and learning using digital tools.
“We do a lot of work around online and blended learning. We have studios where we record video lectures, and we design online courses that can be accessed by students anywhere,” he said.
He explained that the E-Learning Centre has helped both lecturers and students adapt to digital learning.
“We train lecturers to develop online content and help students to access them. Our instructional design flow supports content creation and helps make the learning process smooth.”
Professor Asante also shared how the Centre has been able to grow with support from various collaborations.
“Thanks to the support from partners and leadership from the university, we have virtual reality studios now. These help students explore subjects in a more interactive way.”
He explained how the virtual reality space was commissioned in January last year with support from the Vice-Chancellor. “This was a big step. It means students can now learn in ways that were not possible before.
It also makes learning more inclusive.” The visitors were taken on a tour of the virtual studios and the Online Examination Centre, which the E-Learning Centre uses to host thousands of students.
According to Professor Asante, over 20,000 students have taken online exams using this system. “Our model is online but on-site. Students come to the centre, log in, and take their exams.
We also have mobile setups that allow us to take these tools to other locations,” he added. Professor Greg Heiberger, Associate Dean of Academics and Student Success at SDSU, said he was impressed by the facilities.
