University of Liberia team tours KNUST E-Learning Centre, explores collaboration on forestry and biodiversity conservation

A three-member delegation from the University of Liberia visited the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to explore opportunities for collaboration and capacity building in forestry and biodiversity conservation.

The team, led by Dr. Boakai Keith Robertson, Chief of Party of the Higher Education for Conservation (HECA) program and Executive Director of the Centre of Excellence for Forestry, Biodiversity, and Conservation (FBC Centre), toured the KNUST campus, and visited the KNUST E-Learning Centre.

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Silviculture and Forest Management, Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources, Dr. Joana Akua Serwaa Ameyaw, also accompanied the group.

Dr. Robertson expressed his satisfaction with the visit

Dr. Robertson expressed his satisfaction with the visit. "We have been impressed with the E-Learning Centre. The level of technology here is good, and some of the features we've seen are not found in other institutions we've visited.

This is a great opportunity for us to learn and adopt best practices to improve our programs back in Liberia."

The delegation’s visit was part of a larger partnership between KNUST's Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources and the HECA program, funded by USAID.

This collaboration is to strengthen forestry education in Liberia through capacity-building initiatives at the University of Liberia and the Forestry Training Institute.

Dr. Robertson further elaborated on the goals of the HECA program. "We want to align Liberia's forestry education with global standards, promoting sustainability while addressing the unique needs of Liberia’s forest-dependent communities.

The collaboration with KNUST will help us achieve these objectives," he explained.

Dean of the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources at KNUST, Professor Benjamin Betey Campion, led discussions which included areas of cooperation, training on geospatial technologies, soft-skills development, tree species identification, and forest health protection.
