KNUST E-Learning Centre Launches 2025 E-Learning Awareness Week with Focus on Responsible Innovation

The KNUST E-Learning Centre has launched its 2025 E-Learning Awareness Week.

The event opened with a call to use digital tools responsibly in transforming teaching and learning.

It brought together university leaders, government representatives, industry players, and students.

Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, said the university has made strong progress since the introduction of the E-Learning Awareness Week in 2022.

“This year, we are moving with a clear focus on responsible innovation. As we explore how to transform education using digital tools, we must remember that this transformation should be inclusive and ethical,” she said.

The theme for the week is “Transforming Education through Responsible Innovation and Inclusion in the Digital Era.”

Professor Eric Appau Asante, Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre, said the theme is a call to action.

“Our goal is to ensure that technologies like Artificial Intelligence, big data, and mixed realities are used in ways that empower learners, not create barriers,” he said.

He noted that in the last semester, over 50,000 students across the six colleges of KNUST took part of their exams online. He credited the success of the online exams to the planning and teamwork of the staff at the E-Learning Centre.

Representing the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation was Emmanuel Ofori from the Innovation Directorate. He said the ministry supports efforts like KNUST’s, which aim to use technology to improve education.

“The real value of digital learning is not just in efficiency. It is in making sure no one is left behind. Even students from poor backgrounds should not be excluded from digital education,” he said.

Mr. Ofori added that digital inclusion has long been part of Ghana’s national agenda. He said policies like the ICT4AD in 2003 and the training of teachers in digital skills have helped shape Ghana’s digital education landscape.

Giving the keynote address was Mr. Daniel Fahene Acquaye, CEO of Agri-Impact Limited.

He reflected on his time as a student at KNUST and said the university has played a key role in developing thinkers and innovators. “We are not just transforming education by adding technology.

We are building lives, shaping society, and changing destinies,” he said.

He encouraged the audience to think beyond just using tools. “If you cannot impact lives with your innovation, it does not count,” he said. The launch also saw the participation of staff and students, with some recalling how digital learning has made it easier for them to access lectures and resources.
