KNUST E-Learning Centre begins 2025 with strategic planning for Faculty Training


The KNUST E-Learning Centre has held its first staff meeting of the year 2025. The meeting was on plans for the year, with a discussion on the upcoming Faculty Training program. The training is to equip lecturers with skills to use the new KNUST Learning Management System (LMS) and improve item writing for online assessments. The Senior Assistant Registrar of the Centre, Mrs. Abigail Dzama Anderson, welcomed the team and introduced a new staff member.

"We are glad to have Eunice Gyebi Fosu join the team as a Senior Administrative Assistant. She was transferred from the Department of Horticulture, and we are ready to work with her as part of the team," she said.

Abeiku Badu Arthur, a Systems Analyst, took staff through the features of the new KNUST LMS interface, as they are set to train the faculty members He explained how the system would make teaching and assessments easier for lecturers and ensure efficiency in course management and online exams. Director of the Centre, Professor Eric Appau Asante, outlined the importance of the training and the preparations made so far. "This training has been planned for months. The team has worked through the break to ensure that we are ready to support lecturers. The sessions will focus on helping lecturers understand the LMS and how to use it for online teaching and assessments," he explained. Professor Asante emphasized the need for effective planning.

He noted that lecturers have many demands on their time, and the three-hour sessions must be used effectively. "The training is about introducing tools and creating a space where lecturers can ask questions and understand how these tools will help them," he added. The training includes a session on item writing for online exams. Professor Asante explained that while lecturers already know how to set questions, the session would introduce methods for professional online item writing. He also assured staff that the system is secure and has been designed to maintain the integrity of online exams.

"There are security features such as biometric registration, restricted access, and watermarked examination sheets. These are in place to ensure that the process is safe for both lecturers and students," he said. The Director also addressed concerns about potential technical challenges. Staff were tasked with preparing solutions to common issues, such as password resets and access errors. Abeiku Badu Arthur shared steps for resolving these problems to ensure smooth participation during the sessions.

The Faculty Training program begins on January 8, 2025, with participation from lecturers across the university. It is expected to help lecturers better use online tools for teaching and assessment.
