The E-learning Centre in performing its mandate in overseeing all e-learning related issues of the University as a one-stop shop for all e-learning activities, organized a two-day digital literacy training for staff, teaching assistants and students of the KNUST Obuasi Campus to equip them with the requisite skills necessary for online teaching and learning. The workshop was held on Monday, 31st January to Tuesday, 1st February, 2022 at the Obuasi Sporting Club Auditorium.

The purpose of the training program was to build capacity for staff and teaching assistants, train students on the use of the virtual classroom (www.myclass.knust.edu.gh) and conduct an e-learning needs assessment at the Obuasi Campus. A feasibility survey was carried out to find a suitable space to serve as an office and studios for e-learning activities.

Prof. Eric Appau Asante, the Director of the E-learning Centre, in his remarks touched on the importance of proper netiquette on the virtual environment. Due to non-verbal communication being limited on the internet, practicing proper netiquette can prevent misunderstanding and miscommunication. He urged all the participants to be abreast and familiarize with the advancements in e-learning pedagogies. This will be to their advantage in the situation where an increase in COVID-19 cases brings about the decision of running online and in-person blended teaching and learning.

He also explained the functions and responsibilities of the staff, TAs and students in the virtual environment. The facilitators who aided the Director in his delivery were Mr. Christopher Addo; the Senior Assistant Registrar, Mr. Oscar Ousseni Ouedraogo, Mr. Edwin Edem Adedze and Mr. Ebo Arthur. The participants were trained on how to set up a course page, partake in quizzes and online discussions forums and how to upload and download lecture materials, assignments.

They were also taken through the netiquette of online teaching and learning. The facilitators also taught the Teaching Assistants how to set up a Zoom class, share a screen and record lectures. Staff of UITS were also on standby to help in the training by providing technical support.
