KEC Organizes Short Course in sign Language

In keeping with its mission to promote the use of cutting-edge e-learning technologies and pedagogical strategies to facilitate teaching and learning, knowledge creation, and service to the community, the KNUST E-Learning Centre launched a three-week fully online course in collaboration with the Department of Health Promotion and Disability Studies. The three-week course, dubbed Introduction to Ghanaian Sign Language commenced on the 17th of October, 2022 and concluded on 4th November, 2022. The resource persons for this learning experience were instructors from the School of Public Health's Department of Health Promotion and Disability Studies. The course was specifically designed to be given entirely online and to provide participants the chance to learn whenever it is most convenient for them, combining live and pre-recorded class sessions. This is the first fully online short course in the history of the University.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, said in his introductory remarks at the start of the course that it would be the beginning of additional programs of similar ilk. He reiterated that Management had plans to roll out these programs as short courses and be completely online in the near future through the KNUST E-Learning Centre. These future courses included a Master of Education in Educational Planning and Administration, along with short courses in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Proficiency in the English Language, and Cultural and Religious Aspects of African Art. This serves as a rallying cry.

The world as we know it is evolving quickly toward becoming a global village owing to the tremendous advancements in interconnection made possible by the use of emerging media technologies. In this new, interconnected world, it is essential for us to be more inclusive, open-minded, curious about other people's cultures, and receptive to different viewpoints. Language is more than a means of interaction. It is a bridge that connects hearts, connects minds and serves as the bedrock that makes these collaborations and true synergy possible. This course is more than a new language; it is an introduction to empathy, to understanding one another, and to establishing connections with other people.
