KNUST hosts Gender Smart Leadership Short Course for Female Professionals


KNUST has taken a bold step towards fostering gender equality and empowering female professionals with the launch of its "Gender Smart Leadership Short Course for Female Professionals." In collaboration with the KNUST E-learning Centre and the Centre for Capacity Building, this innovative four-day program, from the 12th to the 15th of September 2023, aimed to equip women in the professional sphere with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel as leaders.

The course made a remarkable debut, drawing participation from over 600 accomplished female professionals hailing from diverse industries. Setting the tone for this transformative journey, Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, KNUST's Vice Chancellor, delivered an inspirational opening address.

Her words resonated deeply as she encouraged participants to embrace their dreams without hesitation, emphasizing that one doesn't need a license to pursue their aspirations: "You do not need a license to dream to become what you want to become." The course curriculum was meticulously structured to encompass various facets of leadership development, featuring distinguished facilitators on each day:

Jackqui hARPER

Day One featured Mrs. Jacqui Harper, a certified leadership coach and consultant, leading engaging discussions on the twelve habits that can undermine women's confidence. She provided invaluable insights into enhancing conversational skills, including crafting effective elevator pitches, and addressing perfectionism.

PENNY PULLAN

On the second day, Dr. Penny Pullan, a Global Leadership expert, took the reins, guiding participants in comprehending the "Magic 6,” six statements that bring clarity to their vision. This day was dedicated to honing leadership skills. Dr Pullan admonished the participants to keep the spotlight on the people they are leading and to learn to ask for help when they need it.

Day Three featured two accomplished facilitators, Prof. (Mrs.) Ibok Oduro, a Professor of Post-Harvest Technology at KNUST, who expertly guided participants in crafting personalized development plans.

Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Vodafone Ghana, enriched the session with her insights on equipping oneself for leadership potential, providing valuable tips and guidance.

She encouraged the participants to embrace continuous learning and diverse learning experiences

The course culminated with Abena Ose-Poku, the Managing Director of ABSA Bank Ghana, leading an enlightening discussion on networking, mentorship, and growth. She underscored the significance of setting clear goals and effective planning. Nana Essilfuah Tamakloe, Marketing and Corporate Relations Director at Absa Bank Ghana, wrapped up the course with her insights into the art of networking. She stated expertly that “Network is a growth currency.” Beyond its informative curriculum, this course stands as a testament to KNUST's unwavering dedication to advancing gender equality and fostering an environment where female professionals can thrive and make lasting contributions. It strives to level the playing field, enabling women to unlock their full leadership potential. In addition to acquiring comprehensive knowledge and skills, participants are offered a unique opportunity to connect with and learn from the experiences of their fellow female professionals.
